Censo 2010: Brasil ainda metropolitano

300.000 Norwegians move house every year. If the pattern made by this process could be compressed into one short animation, what would would it look like? What could you learn about your society from such an animation, if anything?

Deluge is a C++ application designed to answer these questions. The underlying data was generated by cross referencing Norwegian tax records from 2006 and 2007 to find changes in postal codes.

How to cut carbon emissions: don't be middle-aged

CARBON emissions vary hugely between countries. That is well known, as is the finding that rich people emit more than poor ones. But a newly revised paper* by Emilio Zagheni of the Max Planck Institute in Rostock, Germany also shows how carbon footprints vary by age—and the worrying implications of this.

Diversity of childbearing behaviour in the context of below-replacement fertility in Brazil

Several Latin American countries have reached below-replacement fertility, if not in terms of
the country average, at least for large socio-economic or regional groups within the country. Brazil,
the largest of these countries, already has below-replacement fertility, as shown by a variety of data
sources. The 2007 National Annual Household Survey (PNAD) gives an estimate of 1.96 children per
woman. The recently released DHS (PNDS 2006) showed fertility at 1.8 children per woman. Hence,
one might easily conclude that Brazil is following  the path of Mediterranean countries like Italy,
Spain and Portugal. Indeed, the pace of continuous decline observed suggests that the quantum of
fertility in Brazil will probably reach the lowest-low fertility of those countries in the near future
(Lesthaeghe and Willems, 1999; Kohler, Billari, and Ortega, 2002). However, history does not repeat
itself when comparing Latin American and European countries: one of the biggest differences is the
timing of childbearing.

The age and sex of migrants 2011

The Wallchart displays, for the first time, estimates of international migrant stock by age and sex for 196 countries or areas with 100,000 inhabitants or more as of mid-2010.

The Wallchart contains five indicators: (a) international migrant stock by age; (b) female migrants as a percentage of the international migrant stock by age; (c) international migrant stock as percentage of the total population by age; (d) the percentage distribution of international migrants by age; (e)median age of international migrants.

Data for countries or areas with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants in 2010 are included in the estimates of migrant stock by age of the major areas and geographical regions but are not shown separately.

Fellowships for European Doctoral School of Demography

Applications for the 2012-2013 program will be accepted from January 2012 onwards. The application deadline is 15 April 2012.

EDSD is an eleven-month program that is offered every year, with the goal to provide students in the first year of their doctoral studies with an appropriate high-level education in demography. Students will acquire a solid knowledge base on causes and consequences of demographic change, population data, statistical and mathematical demography, as well as modeling, simulation and forecasting. The School’s courses are structured in such a way that the students work on precise formulation of a thesis topic and early steps of their dissertations. The language of the School is English.

Climate Change, Migration and Conflict: Addressing Complex Crisis Scenarios in the 21st Century

The costs and consequences of climate change on our world will define the 21st century. Even if nations across our planet were to take immediate steps to rein in carbon emissions—an unlikely prospect—a warmer climate is inevitable. As the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, noted in 2007, human-created “warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and rising global average sea level.”
As these ill effects progress they will have serious implications for U.S. national security interests as well as global stability—extending from the sustainability of coastal military installations to the stability of nations that lack the resources, good governance, and resiliency needed to respond to the many adverse consequences of climate change. And as these effects accelerate, the stress will impact human migration and conflict around the world.
